About This Collection

A conversation piece with history: Fordite (a.k.a. Detroit agate) forms from built-up layers of vintage automotive paint, later cut and polished like a gemstone. Every cabochon reveals hypnotic stripes and swirls, so no two are ever alike. I bezel-set select cuts in sterling silver or 14k gold to spotlight the pattern and create modern heirlooms with a wink to American design heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Fordite?
Fordite (also called Detroit Agate or Motor Agate) is layers of automotive paint that built up on factory fixtures over decades of hand-spraying cars. When factories switched to automated painting, these paint layers were salvaged, cut, and polished into beautiful multi-colored stones. Each piece is genuinely vintage.
Is Fordite durable enough for jewelry?
Yes! Once cut and polished, Fordite is sealed and quite durable for everyday wear. Treat it like you would any semi-precious stone. Avoid harsh impacts and chemicals.
Are Ulka Rocks jewelry pieces one-of-a-kind?
Many pieces are truly one-of-a-kind due to unique stone combinations and natural gemstone variations. Other styles are produced in limited small batches. Since I use natural gemstones, each piece has unique color and character even within the same style. Once sold, most designs cannot be exactly replicated.
